In the acute phase up to 80% of individuals who sustain a spinal cord injury experience respiratory complications1. Respiratory complications are life-threatening and multi-disciplinary early intervention is a strong preventative measure. Some respiratory related goals occupational therapists can work on include:
-Client and caregiver education
-Re-training ADL/IADL to reduce oxygen consumption (Energy Management)
-Positioning to support ease of breathing
-Facilitate early mobilization
-Support to implement stress management strategies, breathing techniques, and relaxation strategies
… and so much more!!
