Skin is the body’s largest organ and the first line of defense from the external environment. While skin is strong and can regenerate under typical conditions, it is susceptible to injuries from pressure and shearing forces. There are certain lifestyle and functional factors that influence the skin’s susceptibility to injury. Similarly, there are preventative strategies that can promote good skin integrity. Occupational Therapists can help with skin integrity issues by assessing daily activities and identifying tools such as wheelchair cushions and air mattresses, as well as strategies related to positioning and movement to address pressure needs and reduce the likelihood of shear forces. Once there are issues with skin integrity, it is beneficial to seek medical attention from a Physician or a specialist in wound management.
